Foil or spot UV? Choose the finish by its job.

Compare reflectivity, gloss contrast, stock compatibility, artwork, registration, handling, and proofing before adding either finish to a box or label.

Quick decision

Reflective color and clear gloss are different tools.

Foil adds an opaque metallic, holographic, or pigmented layer. It remains visible on dark stocks and is best for logos, borders, and small focal details where reflectivity or a specific foil color matters.

Spot UV adds clear gloss over a selected area. It works through contrast—especially gloss against matte or soft-touch lamination—and is useful for tone-on-tone patterns, photography details, and subtle background graphics.

For a disciplined result, choose one as the main effect. If both are necessary, separate their jobs: foil for the logo, spot UV for a quieter secondary pattern.

Do not choose from a screen rendering alone. Foil color, paper texture, laminate sheen, ink density, and viewing angle change the physical result.

Substrate and surface

The finish sits on a material system.

Ask the supplier to evaluate the complete stack: board or label stock, printed ink, any laminate or coating, adhesive if applicable, and the finishing layer. A finish that works on smooth coated paper may behave differently on an absorbent, deeply textured, recycled, or soft-touch surface.

  • Foil coverage can change across deep texture, large solids, and tight detail
  • Spot UV contrast may be weak over an already glossy surface
  • Folds, scores, curves, and label edges can introduce cracking or lifting risk
  • Oils, abrasion, condensation, and repeated handling affect durability requirements

For pressure-sensitive labels, the face stock and use environment should be selected before the decorative finish. Review the broader custom label material options or the specific wine label specification.

Artwork preparation

Separate print, foil, UV, emboss, and cut information.

Production artwork should make each operation unambiguous. Keep process-color or spot-color print on its print layers, and supply separate named vector layers for foil, spot UV, emboss or deboss, dielines, cut paths, folds, and white ink where required.

Prepare finish artwork as production geometry

  • Use solid vector shapes at final size rather than raster effects or transparency simulations.
  • Identify the exact foil reference or request a physical foil swatch; “gold” is not a single color.
  • Mark whether an emboss is blind, registered to foil, or aligned to printed artwork.
  • Keep legal copy, barcodes, and small functional information away from finishes that may reduce clarity.
  • Ask the converter to review minimum line, gap, reverse, and trap requirements for the chosen process.

Registration is a production tolerance, not a screen overlay

When foil, spot UV, embossing, and print must align, every operation contributes normal movement. The allowable artwork detail depends on the equipment, tooling, stock stability, sheet layout, and finish sequence. Avoid inventing a universal tolerance: request the converter's applicable requirement, design within it, and approve a physical proof.

One focal effect. One supporting effect.

Foil and spot UV can coexist when each has a distinct role and enough visual space.

  • Foil the markUse a reflective logo or seal as the primary identifier, especially on dark or quiet backgrounds.
  • Gloss the patternUse spot UV for a larger background texture that appears as the package moves in light.
  • Protect readabilityKeep mandatory copy, instructions, and barcodes clear of glare, texture, and complex registration.
  • Check the sequenceConfirm which finish is applied first and how subsequent heat, pressure, coating, folding, or wrapping affects it.

Quote and approval

Compare quotations with the same finish specification.

Foil and spot UV pricing changes with finished size, imposed sheet area, coverage, number of positions, tooling, foil type, coating type, substrate, quantity, spoilage allowance, registration complexity, and whether the package is printed flat or finished after wrapping.

A useful finish request includes:

  • final dieline, dimensions, quantity, and number of versions or SKUs;
  • substrate, printed colors, laminate or coating, and intended service environment;
  • separate vector finish files with named layers;
  • foil reference, UV gloss direction, emboss relationship, and any required physical swatches;
  • sample type, approval criteria, and whether a production proof is required.

Inspect the physical sample

Check foil for incomplete coverage, pinholes, filling of fine detail, edge definition, scuffing, and unwanted transfer. Check spot UV for gloss consistency, pinholes, edge quality, cure, blocking, cracking, and registration. Fold, wrap, handle, and pack the sample as the finished item will be used.

If the finish belongs on a rigid or presentation box, review it with the intended structure on the custom boxes page. Flat swatches are useful for narrowing a direction, but the approved package should represent the final material and manufacturing sequence.
