Outer sleeve

The sleeve controls tray guidance, exterior protection, seam placement, branding area, and the first resistance the user feels.

Sliding tray

The tray carries the product load and must remain square through assembly, insertion, withdrawal, and final packing.

Pull access

A ribbon pull creates a separate tactile detail; a finger notch keeps the opening cue within the board structure.

Selection logic

Define how far the product needs to travel.

A drawer should expose the product clearly without asking the user to overextend a loaded tray. The required travel distance follows the insert layout and removal sequence.

  • One-end or two-end opening and the direction the artwork should face
  • Product reveal point, removal clearance, tray weight, and center of gravity
  • Need for a pull ribbon, finger notch, thumb cut, or exposed tray edge
  • Retention approach if the tray should resist accidental full withdrawal

Friction and tolerances

A clean slide comes from controlled buildup.

Nominal dimensions are only the start. Board, paper, seams, adhesive, finish, and squareness all change the space between sleeve and tray.

Clearance

Leave room for real materials

The engineering allowance must account for the finished tray, wrapped sleeve, seam positions, and normal variation without creating visible looseness.

Review the rubbing faces

Paper texture, lamination, foil edges, embossing, and glue areas should be kept away from critical sliding surfaces where practical.

Physical sample

Approve effort, not a number

The sample should be loaded with the intended product so opening effort, tray stability, travel, and product access can be judged together.

Board and wrap

Specify the moving surfaces deliberately.

Material choice affects rigidity, corner definition, print appearance, finish registration, and the friction between the two structural parts.

Tray insert

The insert must protect without bowing the tray.

Insert geometry begins with the product, then considers removal access, tray wall support, accessory layout, and the direction the packed box will travel.

  • Product dimensions, weight, fragile areas, orientation, and acceptable contact points
  • Finger access, pull tabs, ribbons, documentation wells, and accessory compartments
  • Paperboard, molded fiber, or foam concepts reviewed against the project brief
  • Clearance from tray walls so the insert does not increase friction inside the sleeve

Approve the movement before repeating it.

Project timing is confirmed in the quote after the structure, materials, sample route, finishing, quantity, and destination are known.

Check the slide, then protect it in transit.

Inspection criteria follow the approved sample and documented specification. Final packing should keep the loaded tray from working against the sleeve opening during handling.

  • Sleeve and tray dimensions, squareness, seams, edge condition, and visible alignment
  • Start friction, continuous slide, reveal point, product access, and unintended tray release
  • Insert seating, product retention, pull attachment, notch finish, and artwork direction
  • Unit protection, master-carton orientation, dividers if required, carton count, and shipping marks
