Two-piece structures

Lid depth changes more than appearance.

Overlap controls the visible base, opening path, separation resistance, artwork proportions, and how the packed box is handled.

Shallow lid

A shorter lid leaves more of the base visible and creates a clear separation line, with fit tuned through the finished overlap.

Selection logic

Set the lid depth from the handling sequence.

Begin with how the box is picked up, presented, opened, and repacked. The intended action determines how much overlap is useful and where the user can grip the base.

  • Box height, product weight, carrying position, and risk of unintended separation
  • Desired base reveal, opening speed, grip area, and one- or two-hand use
  • Artwork split across lid and base, seam positions, edge treatment, and finish
  • Insert height, product presentation level, removal access, and repacking needs

Fit and friction

Engineer the finished surfaces, not bare board.

Clearance must include board thickness, paper buildup, seams, adhesive, corners, surface finish, and ordinary manufacturing variation.

Measure the wrapped parts

The effective base size includes its wrap and seams; the effective lid opening includes the inner wrap, turn-ins, corners, and any local buildup.

Overlap

Depth changes resistance

More contact area can create more friction and reduce the available grip on the base. The balance should be judged with the intended product loaded.

Approve alignment, initial lift, continuous removal, separation, and replacement rather than judging only the closed appearance.

Material buildup defines the final fit.

Core rigidity and wrap behavior affect squareness, corner definition, lid clearance, print appearance, and the consistency of the opening action.

Custom insert

Use the insert to set product height and access.

The insert locates the product within the base and determines the first view when the lid is removed. It should support the contents without pushing the base out of square.

  • Product dimensions, weight, fragile areas, orientation, and acceptable contact points
  • Reveal height relative to the base wall and any surrounding border
  • Finger access, ribbons, documentation, accessories, and replacement sequence
  • Insert clearance from base walls so the loaded box preserves the approved lid fit

Acceptance criteria follow the approved sample and project specification. Structure is checked first because squareness and fit affect every later impression of color and finish.

  • Lid and base dimensions, squareness, wall condition, overlap depth, and closed alignment
  • Initial lift, opening friction, clean separation, replacement, and loaded-box handling
  • Insert seating, product reveal, removal access, wrap seams, corners, and artwork position
  • Unit protection, packing orientation, carton count, internal separation, and shipping marks
