Short answer
Custom packaging has no meaningful universal price or MOQ.
The same outside dimensions can describe a folding carton, a wrapped rigid box, a corrugated mailer, or a box with a fitted insert. Each uses different material, tooling, machine time, finishing, assembly, packing, and freight volume. Quantity matters, but it is only one variable.
A useful quotation starts with a controlled specification. It identifies what will be manufactured, how many versions are included, what the unit price covers, which charges happen once, and where responsibility transfers during delivery.

Use price per usable delivered unit. A lower ex-factory price can become more expensive after tooling, rejects, protective packing, freight volume, duty, tax, damage, or rework are included.

Ask suppliers to price the same defined build. Otherwise, a difference may reflect a different material, process, packing scope, or delivery assumption rather than better value.

Why MOQ exists
The minimum follows the production route.
MOQ is the smallest practical run for a defined build under a defined production route. It can be influenced by raw-material purchasing, sheet or roll yield, tool and machine setup, color preparation, outsourced finishing, manual assembly, quality control, and packing.
- A stock material with digital printing may support a different minimum from a custom-dyed paper with offset print
- One shared structure with several artworks may still require separate print setup for each version
- A simple carton and a wrapped rigid box of similar size can have very different labor and setup requirements
- An insert, label, ribbon, magnet, sleeve, or protective bag may carry its own production minimum
Share both the first order and the repeat forecast. That gives the supplier enough context to compare a pilot route with a more efficient repeat-production route.

Value engineering
Reduce avoidable cost without making the pack unreliable.
The strongest savings usually come from simplifying the system before artwork and tooling are locked.
- Right-size the structureReduce unused volume, unnecessary layers, oversized inserts, and avoidable freight space while protecting the actual product.
- Standardize componentsUse one board, paper family, insert platform, label construction, or carton footprint across SKUs where the products allow it.
- Control versionsSeparate what truly needs a unique size, color, language, or finish from what can share one structure and production reference.
- Prioritize one finishUse foil, emboss, spot gloss, special paper, or another focal treatment where it creates the most value instead of stacking processes everywhere.
- Design for packingReduce awkward manual steps, unclear orientation, protective-film handling, and assemblies that create damage or slow the packing line.
- Plan the calendarAllow enough time for sampling, revision, material preparation, inspection, and a suitable freight route rather than paying to recover an avoidable delay.

Landed cost
Follow the unit to the destination.
Packaging cost does not stop at the factory gate. Finished dimensions, units per carton, gross weight, shipment volume, pallet pattern, delivery mode, customs route, damage exposure, and warehouse handling can change the economic result.
Compare ex-factory cost, one-time setup, inspection, export packing, freight, insurance, duty, tax, destination handling, local delivery, expected loss, and storage. A collapsible structure may reduce freight volume but add setup steps at the destination. A fully assembled structure may simplify packing but occupy more shipment and storage space. Price both routes against the real operation.

RFQ checklist
Send enough information to receive a useful first quotation.
- product dimensions, weight, orientation, variation, fragile areas, and sensitive surfaces;
- preferred package style or reference, required internal or external dimensions, and opening sequence;
- quantity per SKU, first-run goal, repeat forecast, artwork versions, colors, and markets;
- board, paper, corrugated, film, label, insert, ribbon, magnet, or accessory preferences;
- print coverage, colors, foil, emboss, laminate, coating, texture, and physical references;
- sample purpose, approval criteria, inspection needs, unit protection, carton, and pallet limits;
- delivery country, postal code or port, required in-hand date, and preferred Incoterm if known.
If part of the specification is undecided, label it as an option and ask suppliers to quote the alternatives separately. That produces a decision instead of a blended number whose assumptions cannot be traced.
